Tom Hutchinson

TomHutchinsonTom Hutchinson is a UK & European Patent & Design Attorney, and is the Director of Hutchinson IP Ltd.  He has an engineering background, having obtained a 1st class Masters Degree in Materials Engineering from Liverpool University in 1999.  He specialises in mechanical, electrical and engineering work, and has established himself as a specialist in medical devices, green technology, materials engineering, manufacturing and automotive patents.

Background:

Tom obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from the University of Manchester in 2003 and passed his UK and European qualifying examinations in 2006 and 2008, respectively.

Having worked in private practice for over 10 years, he set up Hutchinson IP in 2011, which is based in his home town of Southport, where he lives with his wife, two children (and dog).

Likes & dislikes:

Besides dog walking and part-time employment as “dad’s taxi”, he is currently undergoing training as a 3-axis microlight pilot and enjoys watching films.

  • European Design Attorney (on OHIM’s special list of professional representatives for Community Designs)
  • 1st Class Master’s Degree in Materials Science & Engineering.  

Additional information:

In addition, Tom holds a position on IPReg’s Disciplinary Panel (Patents), has been known to write CPD reports for CIPA and is the published author of several scientific papers on nanoparticle self-assembly.  He has been an invited speaker for CIPA, at various IP events in the north west and at Cambridge University’s Cavendish Laboratories.  He was UK Science Engineering and Technology Student of the Year (Materials Science Category) in 1999 and won the University of Liverpool’s Mason Bibby prize. Tom is also the former President of the Liverpool and North Wales Materials Society.
